Keeping Your Workplace Safe: Test & Tag Services Across the Central Coast

Electrical faults are one of the most preventable causes of workplace incidents—yet they remain a common risk across many industries. That’s where we come in. At Coastal Conex Electrical, we provide professional, fully certified Test and Tag services across the Central Coast, helping businesses stay compliant and protect their people.

From busy construction sites to quiet office buildings, every workplace relies on electrical appliances. Over time, cords fray, plugs loosen, and internal components break down. Regular testing helps catch these issues before they become dangerous—preventing electric shocks, equipment failures, and even fires.

We inspect, test, tag, and document each item using calibrated equipment and in line with AS/NZS 3760 standards. Our process is detailed, reliable, and designed to keep your business running safely.

Whether you need a one-off site check or regular scheduled testing, Coastal Conex Electrical is ready to help. Our certified electricians work efficiently to minimise disruption to your day, and we provide clear tagging and full reporting for your records.

Why Is Test and Tag Important?

It’s easy to forget just how many electrical appliances keep your workplace running—kettles in the staff room, computers in the office, drills on site, or vacuums for cleaning crews. Over time, even the most reliable equipment can wear out. Cords get tugged, plugs get bent, and internal wiring breaks down without warning.

When something goes wrong, it’s often fast—and dangerous. A frayed lead or faulty plug can lead to electric shocks, equipment damage, or even fire. That’s why Test and Tag isn’t just a tick-box exercise—it’s a practical step toward keeping your team safe and your business running smoothly.

In NSW, businesses are required to test and tag their electrical equipment regularly, depending on the work environment. A dusty construction site or a warehouse full of forklifts isn’t the same as a quiet office, and the safety standards reflect that. At Coastal Conex Electrical, we follow the AS/NZS 3760 safety standard to ensure your gear is tested properly and you’re covered from both a safety and compliance standpoint.

Because in the real world, things wear out—and when they do, you want to be sure you’ve taken every step to keep people safe.

Who Needs Test & Tag?

If you manage a business, chances are you’ve got electrical safety obligations to meet. Test and Tag applies to a wide range of industries, including:

  • Construction and demolition sites – where portable tools see heavy use
  • Warehouses and factories – with constant machine operation
  • Commercial cleaning teams – using equipment in multiple locations
  • Offices and retail stores – even for basic appliances like kettles and monitors
  • Schools, community centres, and public facilities

We tailor testing schedules to suit your environment, usage levels, and risk profile—because what works for a factory floor won’t suit a front desk.

Do Homes Need Test & Tag?

In most cases, standard residential properties don’t require test and tag. But there are a few exceptions where it’s worth considering:

  • Home-based businesses, especially if you employ staff
  • Short-term rental properties, like Airbnbs
  • Contractors or trades who use their own portable equipment at client sites

In these cases, testing can help reduce liability, protect your reputation, and satisfy insurance requirements. If you're not sure, just ask— we’re happy to point you in the right direction.

How Often Should You Test?

There’s no one-size-fits-all rule when it comes to test and tag frequency—it all depends on how the equipment is used, where it’s used, and the level of risk involved in that environment. Equipment used in harsh or high-traffic areas will naturally need to be checked more often than items sitting quietly in a low-use office.

Here’s a breakdown of general industry guidelines based on AS/NZS 3760:

  • Every 3 months – For high-risk, high-use environments like construction sites, demolition work, or hire equipment that is regularly moved, handled, or exposed to tough conditions. These items face frequent wear and need more frequent checks to remain safe.
  • Every 6 months – For factories, warehouses, and commercial cleaning equipment. These areas may not be as harsh as construction sites, but machinery and portable tools are often used daily and in demanding conditions.
  • Annually to every 5 years – For office environments or low-risk indoor settings, depending on the type of equipment and how it’s used. For example, a desktop computer in a fixed location may only need testing every five years, while a kitchen kettle or extension lead in regular use might require annual checks.
  • Portable RCDs (Residual Current Devices) – These safety devices need to be tested more frequently depending on the type of RCD, how portable it is, and the conditions it’s used in. Some may require push-button checks daily or monthly, and formal testing every 3 or 6 months.

At Coastal Conex Electrical, we don’t just follow a generic schedule—we assess every workplace individually to set up the right testing frequency for your site and equipment. This ensures you stay compliant, safe, and not spending money testing items more often than necessary.

Qualified and Certified Technicians

At Coastal Conex Electrical, all test and tag services are carried out by experienced electricians with the right training and certification. Our technicians hold relevant electrical qualifications, up-to-date training in testing and tagging, and the insurance coverage required to operate safely on-site.

You can trust us to identify risks others might miss—and to do it properly, the first time.

What’s Involved in the Test and Tag Process?

At Coastal Conex Electrical, our Test and Tag process is designed to be thorough, efficient, and fully compliant with Australian safety standards. Every test is performed by a qualified, licensed electrician using calibrated equipment—so you can be confident your workplace is in safe hands.

We carry out a two-part inspection: a visual check followed by electrical testing. Each step plays a critical role in identifying hazards before they lead to serious issues.

1
Visual Inspection

Before anything is plugged in or powered up, we take a close look at the item. This includes:

  • Checking for frayed cords, exposed wires, or damaged plugs
  • Looking for cracks or warping on casings, switches, or power boards
  • Ensuring labelling is intact and equipment isn’t showing signs of overheating

This step helps catch obvious wear and tear that might already pose a safety risk.

2
Electrical Testing

Next, we use specialist testing tools to assess internal safety:

  • Earth continuity tests verify that the appliance is properly grounded
  • Insulation resistance tests ensure electrical current stays where it should and doesn’t leak through insulation
  • Polarity and circuit tests confirm that wiring is correct and functional

All of these are measured using calibrated equipment to meet the standards outlined in AS/NZS 3760.

3
Tagging and Documentation

Once each item passes inspection, we apply a durable tag showing:

  • The date of testing
  • The next due date
  • The technician or business name

This makes it easy to identify tested equipment at a glance and know when it's due for rechecking.

4
Compliance Reporting

We also provide a digital test report with all the relevant details—perfect for businesses that need to:

  • Maintain up-to-date WHS records
  • Prove compliance during audits or inspections
  • Keep track of asset maintenance history

Our reports are clear, organised, and tailored to suit your record-keeping needs.

This process isn’t just about ticking boxes—it’s about making sure your team is safe and your business is protected from unnecessary risks. If you have a lot of equipment across multiple sites, we can even set up scheduled reminders and site-wide reports to make managing it all easier.

Keeping Your Workplace Safe and Compliant

Good record-keeping is more than a formality. It helps you stay on top of re-testing schedules, reduces the risk of downtime, and gives you peace of mind that your team is protected. In the event of an incident, having complete testing records can demonstrate that reasonable steps were taken to meet your WHS obligations.
